Aussie cruising fanatics share their top cruise tips

An Aussie couple who are dedicated to cruising have shared their top tips to keep in mind before setting sail.

Marty and Jessica Ansen are about to set off on their 130th cruise and have made headlines around the world for their devotion to spending most of their lives at sea.

Together they have sailed roughly 770,000 nautical miles over more than 2,300 days on board, which equates to more than six years spent at sea.

The Brisbane grandparents, both 77, have just headed off on their tenth trip around the globe, which is also their 52nd consecutive cruise adventure.

During all their time spent at seas, the Ansens have learned a thing or two about life onboard, and have shared their top ten tips to make time on a cruise ship as smooth sailing as possible.

Their number one tip for cruise travellers is to take a backup credit or debit card, as Marty told 9Travel, "Replacing a lost or stolen card while overseas is not for the fainthearted."

The Ansens recommend making a clear and legible copy of your passport, as consulates find it a lot easier if you can provide a copy ready to go when you disembark.

After all their years at sea, Marty and Jessica are pro-packers, and recommend wearing all your heaviest clothing when you check in to better adhere to a strict weight limit.

"Jessica and I have one piece of luggage, usually under 20kg," Marty said.

"We also each have one bag of hand luggage. Going on board, regardless of weather, I wear my heaviest clothing."

When it comes to packing, they also advise leaving your toiletries at home.

"Leave consumables like shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and any creams and potions at home as Princess (cruise line) provides basic toiletries and anything you do need can be bought at the first port," Marty said.

Marty and Jessica also recommend packing all your essentials in your hand luggage, as it can often take a while for your checked bags to arrive in your cruise ship cabin.

"Place all jewellery, passports, visas, medication money and credit/debit cards in your hand luggage for easy retrieval," Marty said.

Marty said one thing every traveller must check before setting sail is what electrical connection is used onboard.

"Check what electrical connection is used onboard and have the right adapter ready to charge your devices,' Marty said.

Many ships have American and European plug points, while newer ones may have USB connections too.

When it comes to bringing medications, the Ansens said you should always bring extras, as well as the required paperwork.

"As an extra precaution carry copies of scripts so that if you do run out or lose your medications it will be easier to prove what you need to overseas pharmacies or doctors," Marty said.

Lastly, like any overseas adventure, the Ansens said it is important to always have travel insurance, and to make copies of your policy.

Peter Overton's adorable photo recreation with his daughters

In the whirlwind world of jet-setting journalists, where passport stamps act as badges of honour, it's easy to become a connoisseur of the globe. Peter Overton, the esteemed newsreader (and now, it would seem, traveller extraordinaire!) knows this all too well.

With a career spanning nearly a decade at 60 Minutes, he's seen more corners of the earth than your average compass. From the bustling streets of New York to the serene landscapes of Namibia, his adventures have been the stuff of envy for many.

But hold onto your boarding passes, folks, because Overton recently embarked on a journey of a different kind – one that involved less hard-hitting reporting and more ice skating in Central Park. Yes, you guessed it; he took a trip with his two teenage daughters, Allegra and Giselle, and wife, TV host Jessica Rowe! And yes indeed, it was a whirlwind of teenage thrills and dad jokes.

Their escapade took them to the illustrious cities of New York, London and Paris – a trifecta of cultural richness and Instagram-worthy moments. While Overton might have thought he had seen it all, experiencing these iconic cities through the eyes of his daughters brought a whole new dimension to his travels. Forget about uncovering hard-hitting news stories; the real scoop was watching his daughters' faces light up as they devoured their first New York slice or twirled around on the ice in Central Park.

As Overton told 9Travel, "Every day was a highlight because every day the kids realised what a thrill this was, and they thanked us every day, which just made it so worthwhile." Ah, the joys of teenage gratitude!

Now, you might think that being a household name would automatically mean flying first class and staying in penthouse suites. But fear not, frugal travellers, because the Overton-Rowe clan knows how to stretch a dollar. Opting for apartments over hotel rooms, they were able to enjoy the comforts of home away from home without breaking the bank. (Take note, budget-conscious travellers, because this is how you do luxury on a shoestring budget.)

And let's not forget about dear old dad's role in all of this. While Jessica handles the packing (because let's face it, dads and folding clothes don't exactly mix), it's Overton who takes the reins when it comes to trip planning and booking. "I'm useless," he confesses with a chuckle. But hey, at least he's honest about it.

But the adventure didn't stop at the bright lights of the big cities; they even made a pit stop in Winchester, England, where Overton himself was born. Talk about a blast from the past – in an adorable Overton moment, they recreated a family photo at the village sign, proving that no matter how far you roam, there's always a piece of home to hold onto.

As for future travels, Overton has his sights set on exploring more of his home turf in Australia. Forget luxury train rides in Europe; he's all about road tripping through the Riverina with his girls. And who can blame him? With its picturesque landscapes and charming towns, it's the perfect backdrop for some good old-fashioned family bonding.

So, here's to Peter Overton, the intrepid newsreader turned family travel guru. May your adventures continue to be filled with teenage thrills, dad jokes and plenty of passport stamps. And remember, no matter where life takes you, there's always room for one more family photo by the village sign.

Images: 9Travel

Former beauty queen collapses and dies at just 25

Former beauty queen Jessica Whalley has been named as the woman who died at ex-English soccer star Michael Owen’s stables.

The 25-year-old worked at Manor House Stables in Cheshire, northwestern England, as a transport manager.

Reportedly, Jessica felt ill at around 8:50am, and emergency services raced to attend to her in the racing yard, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have stated that the tragic incident is not being treated as suspicious, explaining with their own statement that “at around 8.50am today, police were made aware that a 25-year-old woman had collapsed at a stables on Old Coach Road, Malpas.

"Emergency services attended the location and, despite the best efforts of all those involved, the woman sadly died at the scene.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and her next of kin have been informed. A file will be prepared for the coroner."

Michael Owen is said by The Sun to have been emotional in the wake of the loss, with one woman sharing on Facebook that it was “so sad seeing him and all his staff in tears today … after such a shock to them … [at] such a young age.

"No health problems[,] 25 is no age ... life really is too short for we never really know how long we have ... thoughts go out to her family and friends."

The National Association of Racing Staff CEO George McGrath had kind words for the late Jessica as well when he explained that she “was a much loved and respected member of the racing community and taken from us at much too early in age."

Manor Farm Stables later released a statement, and tribute to their “valued member”, writing that “it is with deep sadness that we have to announce that a much-valued member of our team died at work this morning.

"The family have been informed and both the family and the team at Manor House request privacy at this time."

Jessica - or ‘Jess’ to her friends - has been remembered as a hard worker, a respected member of the racing community, and a “much loved” friend. But her professional history isn’t limited to the stables, as the young woman once found passion in the beauty circuit.

In 2019, Jessica had the honour of representing the United Kingdom in the Miss Tourism Universe pageant, an event that took place in Beirut and aired on MTV. And in the competition, Jessica made it to the final ten.

And it was one of Jess’s friends who shared the final picture ever taken of Jessica, taken a mere three days before, writing alongside the picture that it was “heartbreaking to hear Jess lost her life today at the tender age of 25.

“She was riding out doing what she loved. We had so many great times working in Dubai.

“May she rest in peace.”

Images: Facebook

Beyond 2000 host Jeff Watson sadly passes away

Getaway’s first ever presenter Jeff Watson has passed away at the age of 80 following a long battle with brain cancer.

The veteran TV host, who was diagnosed with the disease in early 2018, died at Greenwich Palliative Care Hospital.

He was surrounded by his wife Judi, children Lucy and Timothy, as well as his stepdaughter Cara and her husband, Ben.

Despite doctors claiming he had only three months to live when he was first diagnosed, he went on to exceed their expectations by five years.

The presenter had a long career in television spanning over 40 years. He was well known as the original presenter on Getaway from 1992 to 1998, and his love for travel was shared in many family homes nationwide.

His passion for travel extended beyond the show. Watson once flew 23,000 kilometres from England to Australia with John Travolta in a 50-year-old jet airliner to produce the programme Southend to Sydney.

He went on to produce aviation series such as The Boneyard and The Shape Of Things To Come.

Early in his career, he planned and presented a science show called Towards 2000, which he co-hosted with Sonia Humphrey and David Flatman from 1981 to 1984.

He then went on to present the popular show Beyond 2000 and contributed to renowned series such as This Day Tonight, Four Corners, Holiday, and 60 Minutes.

Current Getaway host Catriona Rowntree said in a statement, "This is heartbreaking news.

"As both a colleague and friend Jeff was a joy to be with. You can imagine how interesting he was after so many world travels, above all though he was just so cheeky and fun loving.

"Jeff had the best bloopers ever! Jeff always spoke of his love for his family, I know their hearts will be hurting, and we are sending all our love to them.”

Getaway’s executive producer John Walsh said, "Jeff was really fundamental in the launch of Getaway in 1992.

"As one of the original presenters on the show, he brought a world of experience to the on-air team and had the rare knack of being incredibly funny one minute and projecting authority and gravitas the next.

"Audiences really responded to him and there's no doubt he played a big role in the show's early success. He was a real one-of-a kind and will be missed.”

Aussie TV journalist Jessica Rowe has shared a rare bikini photo with her followers while holidaying in Thailand.

Rowe, who is married to Peter Overton, is on a family holiday with her husband and their two daughters.

The 52-year-old regularly posts online using the hashtag #craphousewife to document unorganised pantries and easy dinners, but spiced things up a little sharing a bikini pic.

It’s rare for her to post photos of herself in a swimsuit - the last time she did so was in January.

In this latest Instagram post, Rowe is seen standing on the beach in a leopard-print bikini by Aussie designer Camilla, accessorised with a straw hat, earrings and a huge smile.

The bikini, called For The Love Of Leo, typically retails for $299 but is currently on sale on the designer’s website for $254.

“Away at last … hope you’re able to take a breather too as the silly season can get super silly,” she captioned the image.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jessica Rowe (@jessjrowe)

Hundreds of Rowe’s followers rushed to wish her a happy holiday.

She received lots of praise for her beach look with plenty of flame emojis populating the comments section.

Images: Instagram

Airline responds to "fat-shaming" onboard comments

Dr Sydney Watson – a US-based Australian journalist and political commentator – took to Twitter on October 11 to complain about being sat between two obese people on an American Airlines flight.

Her mid-flight comments caused an immediate furore as she posted that “I am currently - literally - WEDGED between two OBESE people on my flight,” along with a photo of her personal space being invaded.

“This is absolutely NOT acceptable or okay. If fat people want to be fat, fine. But it is something else entirely when I'm stuck between you, with your arm rolls on my body, for 3 hours.

“I don't care if this is mean. My entire body is currently being touched against my wishes. I can't even put the arm rests down on either side because there's no f***ing room.

“I'm sick of acting like fatness to this extent is normal. Let me assure you, it is not.

“If you need a seat belt extender, you are TOO FAT TO BE ON A PLANE.

“Buy two seats or don't fly.”

I am currently - literally - WEDGED between two OBESE people on my flight.

This is absolutely NOT acceptable or okay. We're sorry you were uncomfortable on your flight.”

This however was not enough for Dr Watson who eventually found out that “what happened to me went against American Airlines own policies regarding overweight passengers.”

A few days later after her initial flight, an American Airlines worker got in contact with Dr Watson apologising for the inconvenience and offered her a $150 Trip Credit.

“I'd rather take the $150 American Airlines offered me as a refund and give it to someone who needs a PT or a gym membership,” she tweeted in response.

Still furious at what occurred on the flight, Dr Watson said she has no regrets over being in the news for fat shaming.

“I'm not sorry. I meant everything I said. Justifying obesity is NOT OKAY,” she said.

“And, rock on to anyone trying to lose weight and change their lives. I believe in you.”

Images: Twitter/Instagram

Jessica Rowe opens up on "bitterness and resentment" towards Karl

On the latest episode of The Jess Rowe Big Talk Show, the popular host has spoken out about the feelings of "resentment and bitterness" against former Today show co-host Karl Stefanovic following losing her job with Channel Nine, now 15 years ago.

After Rowe took over Tracy Grimshaw's seat on the show in 2006, she was almost immediately criticised for a range of "issues", including not having enough chemistry with Stefanovic, plus attacks over her hair, her laugh and her weight.

Taking time off for maternity leave in 2007, she was soon let go over reported "payment disputes”.

At the time it was alleged that former CEO of the Nine Network Eddie McGuire – who held the position from 1998-2021 – had pushed for Rowe to be sacked during a meeting with executives. Rowe herself revealed that she had never had a conversation about her departure with Stefanovic until last year, when he appeared on her podcast to apologise for not doing more to protect her.

Revealing more details about her history with Stefanovic on her latest podcast episode, Rowe revealed that her time co-hosting was "pretty rocky ... and that's an understatement".

She spoke about how Stefanovic "generously" had a conversation with her on her podcast last year, and at the time she was still holding onto her issues.

“From my perspective, there was bitterness and resentment,” she said.

“And I don’t like feeling like that, because it eats you up. They’re such negative emotions. But for me, I found it hard to move past that. There was always this part of me that felt heavy, or I’d look at Karl’s success and there’d be a part of me that would feel jealous and resentful: ‘Hey, why is that happening to you, and it’s not happening to me?’”

During the podcast last year, Stefanovic addressed the issues between them, speaking to her about it for the first time.

"There was no protection and there was nothing and, you know, at the end of the day it taught me to be tough and it taught me to have a thick skin and to be able to know where the line is but it did take me a long time to get there," Karl said.

"And unfortunately for you, it was like, you didn't have a guy next to you, who could have protected you and helped you in the way that I should have and for that, I'm always sorry."

In her latest podcast episode, Rowe said both she and Stefanovic were nervous when he sat down for their chat last year, adding that his apology had finally freed her of the resentment she had been holding.

“Hearing those words from Karl meant so much to me and I hadn’t expected it to have the impact that it did,” she said.

Image: Getty

Understanding home care packages

In her role as Funding Manager at Australian Unity, Claire Watson has answered plenty of questions about Home Care Package funding levels and what it all means. “People are always curious about the different levels of Home Care Package funding and the practical differences in the support you receive,” she says.

“If you're approved for a Home Care Package, you'll be assigned a funding level from 1-4. The main thing to understand is that Home Care Package budgets increase with the levels, so support becomes more comprehensive as you go up. Whatever your approved level, your provider (like Australian Unity) will work with you to develop a support plan that addresses your unique needs and goals, within your budget.”

Home Care Package: Level two
“A level two Home Care Package is designed for somebody with low care needs,” explains Claire. This level of service is designed for someone who is still relatively healthy, mobile and independent but needs some extra support around the house to allow them to maintain their lifestyle. This level of Home Care Package is currently valued at $15,877* for a 12-month period and equates to around 10 hours of services each month.”

A package of services at level two might include fortnightly domestic assistance, such as vacuuming, mopping, dusting, cleaning the bathroom, doing the laundry, and changing and making the bed. Many level two customers also receive monthly gardening assistance – which could include maintenance tasks or lawnmowing.

“You might also choose to have somebody come in to assist with grocery shopping once a week,” Claire adds. This can ease the burden of carrying shopping from the supermarket if you don’t drive.

Example package of services – Level Two

Fortnightly cleaning services

Monthly gardening and maintenance services

Weekly shopping assistance

Monthly group social activities and outings

Home Care Package: Level three
People approved for a level three Home Care Package can expect double the amount of funding of a level two package. The value currently comes to $34,550* for a 12-month period, equating to around 19 hours of services each month and is for someone described as having intermediate needs.

“Generally, the big change we'll find is that someone on a level three package has been assessed at that level because they do have care needs that are greater than somebody on a level two. Sometimes that’s because they are experiencing mobility issues or managing a health condition,” Claire says.

Common service inclusions on a level three package are personal care services, which might include assistance with showering, dressing, grooming or toileting. Sometimes personal care can just mean having a care worker present as you shower, for peace of mind.

“You might be a little worried about safety in the shower and want someone nearby, or you might need a bit of assistance getting dressed. Our care staff are incredibly kind, compassionate and discreet in the support they provide,” Claire says.

People approved for a level three package may also have allied health services as part of their support plan. “At that time there may be more of a need for allied health services, such as physio or podiatry. How your new haircut could help save the Daintree

The Daintree rainforest is overflowing with flora and fauna not found anywhere else in the world. It is also believed to be the oldest continual patch of tropical rainforest in existence. With more than half of the world’s rainforests already destroyed, here's why it is imperative to help support the ‘buy back’ process to ensure this spectacular part of our nation can’t be developed.

HalfCut is an innovative charity created in 2017 which is helping to save the Daintree rainforest in Far North Queensland. In fact, during the covid lockdowns of 2021, they helped raise more than $1.2m for the Daintree buyback program which protected over 500,000 square metres of endangered Daintree rainforest. This is equivalent to 123.55 football fields worth of tropical rainforest.

Here’s what you need to know right now about the Daintree
Two-thirds of the Daintree Lowland Rainforest was excluded from inclusion in the Daintree National Park and World Heritage Area that was declared in 1988. A developer created 1,137 blocks in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest. In 1982 a pro-development Queensland State Government re-zoned leasehold and freehold in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest, enabling a developer to subdivide it into 1,137 blocks.

This resulted in the building of over 50km of roads and the clearing and development of high conservation value rainforest for housing. The freehold land between the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation has World Heritage values and should be protected in the Daintree National Park.

Why is this such an important cause right now?
“HalfCut is an environmental not-for-profit that invites people to be visual disruptors to raise the urgent awareness that half the world's forests are destroyed, and regrettably a further 30 percent of the world’s forests are degraded,” explains James Stanton-Cooke (affectionately known as Jimmy HalfCut), who, along with his life partner Jessica Clarke, is the force behind this conversationalist challenge.

He adds, “The latest 2022 State of the Environment Report found that almost half of Australia's land is now used for grazing and the areas committed to forestry and cropping have increased. More than 6.1 million hectares of primary native forest, which is an area more than six times the size of suburban Melbourne, has been cleared since 1990.”

Over the five years to 2019, nearly 290,000 hectares of primary forest and 343,000 hectares of regrown forest was cleared. Yet another reason to go to HalfCut to raise this urgent awareness and provide proactive tangible outcomes to addressing these issues.

The HalfCut Challenge in August invites the brave to courageously have some hair-larious fun to start conversations about conservation and raise funds for Daintree buyback to be saved from development.

“In the midst of the ongoing climate crisis events - drought, fires, and more recent flooding and pandemic events, saving rainforest and rewilding (tree planting) of our rainforests is needed more than ever. The proof is in the trees for carbon drawn down, increasing biodiversity, water cycles, foods, medicines and giving us clean air to breath,” adds Stanton-Cooke.

James Stanton-Cooke (affectionately known as Jimmy HalfCut) and co-founder Jessica Clarke are the force behind this conversationalist challenge.

Here’s how the ‘buy back system works
HalfCut and two other NFP’s partners – Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation and Rainforest 4 – joined together with the unique program "Stronger Together" for the buyback high value conservation Lots in the Daintree to expand back into Daintree National Park.

Upon settlement, the title of the property will be transferred to the Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation, who will then manage the transfer of the title for the land to the Queensland Government. The process of purchasing the property and transferring it into the national parks estate will likely take between six to 12 months.

“It is about righting a wrong in more ways than one as money raised also helped the Daintree rainforest now be jointly managed by Traditional Owners and Queensland National Parks. This now means the Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation (JYAC) now is an integral part of managing the conservation of the Daintree rainforest so it will always be protected,” says Jessica Clarke.

The team behind HalfCut helped to commemorate this achievement with a Welcome to Country smoking ceremony with traditional owners.

In 2022 the goal is to once again crack a million dollars in donations. There are three Daintree rainforests Lots supporters are aiming to save including:

Lot 6 - 3.75 hectares located in Forest Creek, Daintree Lowland Rainforest, Queensland (more information here)

Lot 93 - 8.09 hectares located in Diwan, Daintree Lowland Rainforest, Queensland (more information here)

Lot 197 - 1.015 hectares located in Cow Bay, Daintree Lowland Rainforest, Queensland (more information here)

Here’s why these are particularly important lots to save
All 24 lots saved have had intensive surveys by respected ecologist and botanist Kristopher Kupsch who has recently encountered what is thought to be a new species of Gardenia in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest.

It is Kupsch’s job to determine what endangered and threatened species are on the lots, what invasive species and if a new potential species are potentially found. With 25 years of experience in the Daintree he has never encountered this species before.

“When I first saw the Gardenia (Atractocarpus sp. nov.), I wondered what it was because the specimen looked different to all known species in the Rubiaceae family but matched Atractocarpus, being similar to the Hairy Gardenia (Atractocarpus hirtus),” Kupsch says, adding that the Hairy Gardenia is common in the Daintree lowlands.

Ecologist and botanist Kristopher Kupsch with the newly discovered species of Gardenia.

The iconic and colourful cassowary is one of the most recognisable icons of the Wet Tropics. This striking bird with its brilliant blue and purple head and neck, red wattles, and amber eyes, appears extensively on promotional brochures and souvenirs throughout the region. However, it is an endangered species and its future is uncertain.

Saving these lots is providing the much needed habitat required for their survival. Cassowaries prefer lowland Daintree areas, where regrettably cars and pet owners' dogs are impacting cassowaries and chicks' population, along with feral pigs eating the eggs and chicks and competing for their food. It is now estimated that the gardener of the Daintree, the cassowary, a keystone species, numbers less than 2,500 in the Daintree. A male cassowary with three chicks was recently sighted on Lot 93.

The iconic and colourful cassowary is one of the most recognisable icons of the Wet Tropics.

What exactly is HalfCut about?
HalfCut day is Wednesday 31st August 2022, when anyone wanting to support the plight of the Daintree is welcome to accept a crazy hair challenge. Created by James Standon-Cooke (affectionately known as Jimmy HalfCut) and life partner Jessie Clarke, this environmental activist couple is challenging you to cut off half of your hair, beard or moustache. If you feel like splashing out in colour then dye your locks a different shade or braid half of your hair, undercut or even get a normal haircut showing half of the length removed. More recently half stylish face makeup, baking goods, and even the odd half mowed lawn have been popular. It’s anything HalfCut to help to raise awareness and money for this great cause. Ultimately it’s about raising awareness for conservation.

It is all about doing your bit to help to protect the oldest rainforest in the world. Don’t feel like doing the challenge but know someone aged 18+ who will? Then dare them to accept and sponsor them through this registered charity. Dozens of childcare centres, schools, Universities and businesses have rallied behind this campaign to save the Daintree forest.

All money donated helps protect Daintree Rainforest in Far North Queensland which provides crucial habitat for many endangered species such as the Musky-Rat Kangaroo, Waterfall Frog, Southern Cassowary and Northern Quoll.

The Daintree is the most biologically diverse in the world with lush fauna and includes wildlife such as 65 percent of different kinds of native butterflies and bats, 35 percent of the world’s types of frogs, and 20 percent of Australian bird species.

Here’s how your new haircut could help
Every $2.50 is one more square metre saved of the world’s oldest rainforest. Shave half your beard, cut, colour, braid your hair or simply get a haircut.

World HalfCut Day is on 31st August. Visit www.Go.HalfCut.org to find out more and become an environmentally friendly hero. Then share your new hair do (or hair don’t!) on social media (using the hashtag #HalfCut) with friends and family to help protect the oldest rainforest in the world. It is up to you how long you stay HalfCut. It may be for a day, a week or even a month.

It is all about raising money, spreading the word and having fun. The more you raise the more you’ll help this important cause and all donations over $2 are tax deductible. You can even create a team to join together to have a hair-raising adventure and help a great cause.

Don’t want to mess with your perfect locks? Then help spread the word by buying a HalfCut t-shirt, bag, hat or hoodie and save 10 square metres of rainforest for life per purchase, or simply make a donation to this great cause. Visit go.halfcut.org

How can you help save the Daintree?
OverSixty has our very own HalfCut squad to sign up to and/or donate to save the three Lots this August, reaching the $1m target goal.
